Fished KY Lake Saturday from 6-1 with mixed results.
Put in at Big Richland Creek near Waverly.
Started on a main lake Hydrilla mat throwing a frog. No shad or fish moving and no blow-ups. Moved North to some Islands off the main river channel and threw topwater for 30 minutes with no takers (theme here- the main lake ledges are dead for me).
Rain started around 7:00 am. Put on my rainsuit and headed on North to a major creek near Big Sandy. Found a nice Milfoil bed in a bay near the creek mouth with lots of shad activity. Started by fishing a Sammy in 5-6 ft on outside edge of grass. Three fish in first 15 minutes (all small keepers around 2 lbs each). Fish never really schooled in there, so I moved up shallow in the grass and started throwing a swimming frog on 50 lb braid, and it was on. Caught 6 solid keepers and missed about five more blow-ups in the grass.
Rain stopped and the bite there died, so I went back out to check some secondary ledge drops in the area. Again, little or no activity on the ledges, so Iwent back to hunting grass in the bays and creeks.
Moved up to a bay near Paris Landing that is full of grass, and immediately noticed the shad activity. Caught four more keepers in there on the frog and a couple of short fish.
While I was in the area I had to check a couple more ledges in the Paris Landing area that have been good in the past- you guessed it- nothing.
Time was running short, so I made the log run back South to Waverly. Hit a hump in a major creek mouth on the way back and caught a coule of solid keepers and one short schooling on the hump (Sammy).
Left there and finished up with about sixty white bass in 45 minutes caught in the jumps on the Sammy.
Pattern was clearly grass in the bays, and even more clear that the ledges are not working (I assume due to lack of current and poor Oxygen levels).
Totals for the day- 12 keepers- best five around 16 lbs.
Only tough part is I'm sure the weather had a lot to do with the good bite. I've got to think there's a flippin bite in that shallow grass if the weather gets tough.
Heading back this Saturday; will report.
