3/13 I went to Lake Wylie for the 1st time ever to fish it. I was prefishing for the Southfork Bassmasters tournament coming up on the 20th. I went and got a map and picked me out a few spots based on weather and time of year. I launched at Southpoint ramp. I first checked the water temps at 53 on the main river and decided to get some late moving bass and fish some ledges and humps on the main lake. This lake really reminds me of Old Hickory, lots of ledges and humps but not really any grass. I found a hump down by the Duke Plant. It was 6ft on top and 20 foot all around and dumping 40 ft into the main river. I began with a jig. On my 5th cast I got a 3lb largemouth. A few minutes later I had a 4lb bass. I wound up getting 4 off the hump. However I really dont think these fish will be ther was the water is warming quickly. These fish will move soon.
I then picked out some back water shallow areas, concentrating on pinch down points and sharp points leading into a channel swing or creek drop. My first point got me several bass in the 2lb range, all caught on cranks. I moved around some just checking points and ledges in the creek channels. I also found some shell beds that produced some fish. About 2 pm I headed into another creek and fished a ledge that was 3ft on top and dropped to 30ft . My 1st cast with a crank yielded my biggest bass of the day, 6.2 lb large head. I then found the back of a creek the water was 60, a littled dirty but fish were schooling back there, they had some bait fish pinned shallow. I was able to whack'em fish after fish for about 30 minutes. However there was a real technique to get them to hit the crank and a specific color. I tried several colors just to check to see if they would hit it and no luck it was only one or two closely related colors. Just chunking and winding did not work. I wont give too much away until after the tournament. My best 5 would have gone well over 18lbs I think. I think that was a pretty good day on the lake for my first time visiting Wylie. I think I will make it back a few more times though the year. I look about like the only nearby ledge lake, maybe High Rock.
